Spring is Here!
Now that it’s warming up, it’s a great time to get out and get active! The Wisteria bus has plenty of exciting stops planned this month: from beaches and vineyards to theatres and local pubs, there’s something to do for everyone.
Wisteria Place will be celebrating its first St. Patrick’s day this month with a themed happy hour accompanied by performer Peter Williams. Don’t forget to wear your best green outfit! As our community continues to grow, not only in the number of residents but also our staff, our celebrations are only getting that much more fun!
Happy hours are a great way to mingle, meet new people, and make lasting friendships. Many of our residents have made new connections by coming to our happy hour events. It provides a relaxed, casual environment to get to know your neighbours, enjoy live performers, and of course, get familiar with the snacks and beverages. We hope to open up the happy hour to family and friends once it's safe to do so with COVID restrictions.
Be sure to check our website, Facebook, and Instagram for updates on what’s going on in the community.
February: A Month of Love & Fun
February was a busy month for Wisteria Place! We rang in the Chinese New Year with the help of a Lion Dance Group and invited our community to come and join in on the festivities.
We also hosted a Valentine's Day happy hour! As residents indulged in chocolate-dipped fruit and champagne, pianist Andre Abreu filled the room with sweet melodies. Love was truly in the air at Wisteria Place!
Sushi Making Lessons
Our residents had the opportunity to learn a new skill or just have fun in our sushi-making demonstration, in collaboration with Ryuu Japanese Kitchen. We are making good use of our demonstration kitchen and hope to have many more cooking classes in the future.
New Safety Classes
With all the fun we’ve been having this month we needed to switch gears into something more serious. Safety is a top priority here, and Wisteria Place values our resident’s safety, privacy, and wellbeing. With more seniors on the internet than ever, being educated and aware is a must! We had Cst. Sylvia Chan and Cst. Roy Wong come and give a presentation on phone call scams, fraud, phishing, and internet safety.
Physical safety is just as important to our residents. We had instructor Larry Wong teach pole walking, with a great turnout! Our very own Ann Lacey, Recreation Manager, will be getting certified to instruct pole walking and help cultivate a safe way of active living in our community.
COVID-19 Rapid Testing Kits
COVID-19 rapid tests will be available for BC Residents who are 70 or older for free at pharmacies. The public-funded rapid tests will be arriving at our pharmacy in the near future.

Health Tips: Fall Prevention
As we age, a fall may result in minor injuries like bruises or more debilitating problems like fractures. Here are five tips to minimize chances of falls:
1. Wear sensible shoes
Consider changing your footwear as part of your fall prevention plan. High heels, floppy slippers, and shoes with slick soles can make you slip, stumble, and fall. So can walking in your stocking feet. Instead, wear properly fitting, sturdy, flat shoes with nonskid soles. Sensible shoes may also reduce joint pain.
2. Take a look around your home for potential fall hazards. To make your home safer:
Remove boxes, newspapers, electrical cords, and phone cords from walkways.
Move coffee tables, magazine racks and plant stands from high-traffic areas.
Use nonslip mats in your bathtub or shower. Use a bath seat, which allows you to sit while showering.
3. Keep your home brightly lit to avoid tripping on objects that are hard to see.
Place night lights in your bedroom, bathroom, and hallways.
Place a lamp within reach of your bed in case you need to get up in the middle of the night.
4. Your health care provider might recommend using a cane or walker to keep you steady. Other assistive devices can help, too. For example:
A raised toilet seat or one with armrests.
Grab bars for the shower or tub.
A sturdy plastic seat for the shower or tub, plus a hand-held shower nozzle for bathing while sitting down.
5. Talk to a pharmacist regarding your prescriptions
Some prescriptions may affect your balance, reaction time, and blood pressure. Feel free to reach out to our pharmacists and find out more about whether your prescriptions may be one of the risk factors for fall.
Regards,
Steven RPH
