Wisteria Place Newsletter May 2022

Posted on May 10th, 2022

Hello May! Welcoming longer and warmer days, Wisteria Place has been embracing all that spring has to offer. With spring comes new beginnings: we welcomed Gurpreet back from maternity leave in the sales position. She will be supporting us on tours, open houses, and leasing our suites.

Unfortunately, we did have to say goodbye to one of our Wisteria Place team members, Recreation Manager Ann Lacey. Ann has been an integral part of Wisteria Place from pre-opening, doing tours, coffee chats, and of course helping connect us in the community and keep our residents happy, healthy, and active. Our team and residents will miss her very much, but we wish her all the best!

We hosted a farewell party for Ann, and had a great time reflecting on all the fun trips, activities, crafts, and events she organized and hosted. We will still be hosting such activities in Ann’s absence as we find the right person to fill the role.

An “out of the box” activity we had recently was “Power of the Pen” handwriting analysis from Elaine Charal. Residents sent in their handwriting and Elaine was able to analyze and provide feedback regarding the style, emotion, and personality traits based on their penmanship.

Health and safety are highly important here at Wisteria Place. We had an evacuation drill led by General Manager Sheila Lively to show residents how to safely evacuate in case of an emergency. It was very informative and helpful for our team and residents.

Ours is an Independent Living community, but we make it a priority to connect residents with accessible health care. That’s why we’re welcoming the “Mobile Denture Care” clinic to our community. They offer on-site denture care with no appointment necessary. We hope to have more mobile clinics in the future!

Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and harmonious spring.

Dealing with Depression

Our thanks to Steveston Medicine Shoppe for their help with this information.

The symptoms of depression can affect daily tasks. Even the simplest tasks can appear daunting and impossible to carry out. However, with the proper diagnosis and treatment, depression can be overcome.

Many seniors are susceptible to depression due to health deterioration, social isolations, and many other factors. It is important to recognize depression and seek professional help without feeling disapproved.

Causes

Depression is caused by a combination of biochemical, genetic and environmental factors. It is in no way a sign of weakness.

Depression is the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain involving neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are responsible for behaviour, thought, and emotion. This type of imbalance can lead to distorted thinking and a skewed view of reality akin to wearing blacked-out glasses that cannot be removed.

Symptoms

The symptoms of depression can vary from person to person and are not necessarily easy to identify.

  • anxiety

  • persistent self-defeating attitude

  • fatigue, weakness

  • irritability

  • withdrawal

  • change in appetite

  • suicidal thoughts

  • loss of interest in daily activities

  • crying easily, for no reason

  • disturbed sleep patterns (insomnia or hypersomnia)

  • feelings of guilt or worthlessness

  • sadness, hopelessness, despair

If you experience a marked change in mood or a noticeable loss of interest or enjoyment in previously pleasurable activities, or if you have had a few of these symptoms for more than two weeks, we strongly encourage you to speak to your doctor, to a health care professional (pharmacist, nurse), or to a loved one. Talking to someone is the first step to getting help. The longer you wait before being diagnosed, the longer treatment will take. It is therefore recommended that you seek professional help as soon as possible.
